Under the watchful eye of a chief torpedoman, a student makes depth and gyro adjustments to a Mark VIII torpedo. Note the heavy application of grease on the weapon. Both tubes and torpedoes were heavily greased prior to the weapon's insertion into the tube, to facilitate ejection when the torpedo was fired. (National Archives)
